Sony is trying emulate the balanced audience of the Playstation 1 and 2 that made them so successful. If you look at the games for the previous two Sony consoles, they composed by far the most balanced libraries of the three main companies (Sony, Nintendo, and Sega in the 5th generation, and Microsoft's taking Sega's place in the 6th). The issue with the consoles of the 6th generation was that the Gamecube's main appeal was to children/teenagers/Nintendo fans whereas the Xbox's main appeal was to teenagers/college students/middle aged men. Sony is trying to avoid emulating the audience of the original Xbox, and I imagine that games such as Singstar, Buzz, and LittleBigPlanet are part of that.
