Osetia has a population of what 80k or maybe a bit more I dont know exactly ( but anyone is free to check it out ) and a small country like that should not exist anymore it cant even keep itself up. It shouldent be alowed for similar sized places to exist, because in the long run its a suicidal plan.
And how could Russia show in a better way what they want then attacking Georgia? The political discussions didnt had any effects so it was finally time to take some action... and they did.
But at the end of the day is more about what you support? You want every single small nationality to have its own country or you want just want one big, capable one... because if you want the first then I cant convince you no matter how hard I would want...

Russian was an option on the census. Why wouldn't they pick Russian?
It's not a small country. It's a region of georgia... kept seperate by russia because Russia wanted to steal it back.

That could be an option to...Oh, and it seems that they havent voted Georgians neither, so afther your ideology they are not Georgians... they are Osetians then? :P But never the less I stand at my first statement and I do bealive that giving autonomy to Osetia would only result in an economical crysis to that land and IMO the only acceptable solution would be to connect it to Russia...Now I really have to go :P

29% voted ethnic georgian. 68% or so ossetian. We are talking about racial polling here.
Their ethnicity. South Ossetians were traditionally a part of georgia. the Race. Which is an middle eastern race.
There are also so Amernians in there... your claim that there are a lot of ethnic russians in there are outright false.
The people who were there under georgias rule are still there.
