universal owned the ip because otherwise nd wouldnt have been given the deal to work on it.  naughty dog did not feel it was worth buying the ip to continue developing on it.  i dont know the price, but considering the sales it must have been dam high.

universal sold most of its ip's (hence spyro as well) to sierra which is now under the activision/blizzard label.
