MHF released on the PSP in 2005. The DS came out in 2004. In 2005, the DS was still being considered as a "shovelware" system and sales weren't incredibly high to begin with. They just happened to use the PSP's power to make a worthy game and it turned out to be a success. Of course, more and more MH fans grew on the PSP, so they kept putting more and more MHs on it. They're putting MH3 on the Wii. If MH3 turns out to be a huge successs...why make a PS3 version MH then? I mean if MHF on the PSP bombed you don't think they'd put more on it, right? There's really no point in a MH on the PS3. |
what does the release date of the DS have to do with anything? the PSP was released on the same month.
Anyways, you're not looking at the big picture. The reason why Monster Hunter was on the PSP instead of the DS was because Capcom could produce a more suitable game to their initial vision. Inother words, to make the best game possible, they used the superior hardware specs on the PSP to make the game they intended to make in the first place, eventhough the DS sold more hardware (and can pottentially sell more software). Now, the reason why MH is on the Wii in the first place it because of the PS3's very slow start in Japan, and the cost of development vs return. What do you think will happen if the PS3 gains a much more respectable install base to warrent the cost of development? If you were a business man, would you rather have money, or money + more money? I'm not saying that capcom would abandon the Wii all of a sudden, but if they can have two MH console games that make money off of two/three different consoles then what would be the point of NOT releasing the game on the Wii? Especially if the producer desides to upgrade the technology.

THe bit about the PS3 having a respectable fanbase...I don't see that antytime soon. The PS3 is still selling 10k or near near 10k a week. SC IV had no effect whatsoever. The last boost was MGS4...and that's a pretty big game. No other games in the future can do that. The only upcoming hopes in Japan that can actually boost the PS3 well enough is...FF XIII and maybe WKC. Those are still a while off, though I think WKC might be releasing this year.
As for our money + more money proposition, why not just make money + even more money than money on the PS3? If MH3 gets a respectable fanbase on the Wii...why make a PS3 one? It's the same as the MHFs. Why not make a MHF for the DS when Japan sales (heck, WW sales) are so high? Simple. MH has a respectable fanbase on the PSP. Why make a game on a system that's undecided whether or not it could be as big as a success on as the other system? Makes no sense.
And like Claude said, they basically rehashed the PS2 MH assets and for MHF and it turned out to be a success.

You're mixing words. We're talking about the PS3 having a respectable install base, the fanbase, in all likely hood is there but without a game(s), there's no reason for that fanbase to buy in. The part with the PS3 and getting a repectable install base is completely theoretical, which is why i doubt you see the logic in this. I can't say when or how the PS3 will gain any substantial ground in Japan, but i do know that if they weren't in the same bind as they are now, it would be much easier for Sony to get some 3rd party franchises on their side (obviously).
But, yeah. Claude is right about the rehashing of MH onto the PSP, which like I said, wouldn't be practical if they rehashed the franchise on the DS instead. The point is this, Capcom said, they decided to release Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii for two reasons: 1. The development costs for the PS3 was too expensive 2. The success of the Wii in Japan makes the decision logical. Now, this entire topic is based on whether MH would be possible on the PS3 IF it ever gained a successful base to warrant the cost of development. Think about it, what would prevent Capcom (the guys that rereleased RE4 multiple times) from releasing a MH game (or spinoff) on other consoles if they could gain reasonable profit from it? At that point, Capcom could do many things, port the game, rehash the same game on the PS3, or make a dedicated spinoff. All of which they've done in the past for other consoles. Working on one console is a business limitation, Working on two successful consoles is a business limitation with less limits.
With multiplatform development becoming so common nowadays, i fail to see why this would be any different.
