Developers talk with other developers, discuss things at roundtable sessions at places like GDC, etc. It doesn't take much to get a consensus of views. For example, if you take a look at the line that Chris from Spore said a few years to a bunch of devs - that the Wii is nothing more than 2 gamecubes duct taped together. Not exactly the most insightful thing, but his expression and feeling towards the system was made known. Ask a dev for their opinion, they'll give you a monologue that'd make Shakespeare blush.
Quickly to touch back on demographic, you want to tell me that Solid Snake and SackBoy are targeted at the same crowd? I'm not sure how up you are on your marketing, but Sackboy is geared to be a marketing point - dolls and the sort. You are not the target demographic, no matter which way you paint it. It might appeal to you, but you are not the intended audience.
And no, previews and words from the source (Sony) do not make things fact. If you honestly believe those things as fact, you fit perfectly into cookie cutter corporate america.
