The bigger hype is there for the game, you're gonna see more hate towards it.
Basically, yeah. The only games I can think of that have a basically universally positive reception are Team Ico's stuff. And that, I think, is only because they're still so niche that people don't feel like they're being bombarded with praise for it. That's what people hate -- feeling like everybody's blathering on about a game like a bunch of evangelical Christians. And a frequent, though childish, response is to turn that annoyance with the players against the game itself. Sometimes the backlash actually starts to dominate discussion: for instance, GTAIV, Halo 3, Final Fantasy VII.
But usually it doesn't happen until after the game is released, especially with a new IP. LBP has the additional problem that a lot of people genuinely don't seem to "get" its concept. I've seen a lot of posts on boards from people who don't have any malice toward the game, but simply don't understand what the appeal is. It might be a personality thing that just makes them uninterested in a game like this, or it might be that they'll only grasp it once they've had hands-on experience.
Still, in my experience, on most sites the positive reactions to the game still dominate.
