I hardly ever used to fire my red shells when I was in like 3rd place because I felt it was better to protect my position than to fire red shells at the people ahead of me that might have bananas to protect them and then leave myself exposed to red shell attack from those behind me. But then there was a race I was in 2nd place where I felt I just had to win and fired my red shell ahead with just one more bend to go. It didn't hit the person in 1st but someone sent a red shell from behind which hit me. Then as I was about to set off I got hit by another red shell. Then by a star and then by a rocket. I ended up dropping from 2nd to 9th (and last place). Now I never ever fire red shells if I don't have another item to protect me with.
