There is a lot of truth in your words (as per usual) but recommending LO and ES is better for someone who has no interest in becoming an otaku or JRPG fanatic overnight and more according to his currently owned platforms.
I could easily have said yea, get Chrono Trigger, Vagrant Story, all the FFs, Secret of Mana, Persona series, Shadow Hearts series, Kingdom Hearts series, Suikoiden series, Star Ocean series, Xenogears series, Tales series etc. etc. and go get a DS/Wii/PS2 but I think this guy will be completely overwhelmed.
Not saying that LO or ES is the best JRPGs ever, far from it, and I agree that some people have been wearing rose-tinted Gooch glasses when pouring accolades, but it will definitely be the most approachable to him at this current time and I wouldnt go as far as say avoid them like the plague. Is it the greatest introduction he will ever get for a JPRG? No. Is it the best introduction he will get as a taste in JRPG for the current platforms he owns? Yes.
