I'd be more inclined to take Carmack's words seriously had id actually produced anything of note over the last 7-8 years, rather than the succession of glorified tech demos they've churned out masquerading as games.

My thoughts are along this as well, are us PC gamers really missing out on anything since ID hasn't produced something really good in a long time?  Not to mention that PC has higher profit margins on its games because of no console licensing fee and DD.  1 million boxed games sold on console, if you publish, ~$20 million ($10-15 licensing, $15 to the store).  1 million boxed games sold on PC, if you publish, ~$35 million ($15 to the store) since we are unsure exactly how much Microsoft's and Sony's licensing fees are.  Oh btw, since Valve loves Steam so much, 1 million DD games sold, $50 a piece minus bandwidth costs, ~$45 million.  I would think if companies really are crunched a bit with HD gaming costs, they would make it on PC first (cheaper) port down to consoles and by all means digitally distribute games and sell it for pc and console.  Of course those are rough estimates.
