Yeah TVersity is pretty quick on starting up media - i also use Nero and WMP 11 depending on how i feel lol
Now to get around the "music turns off any time you select anything else in the XMB" thing have you tried pressing the PS button during playback instead? - i'll try when i get back home...I've never come across that before when running photo slideshows with streamed music in the b/g...grant it my photos were on the PS3 HDD and not streamed
