well upgrading the 40GB and having one model is a good start for Sony. Adds more value for $399. I expect production costs to fall dramatically afterward. 45nm CELL, 65nm RSX (55nm future).

agreed. production costs are going to be down in the not too distant future, they already have gone done significantly since launch.

and i expect them to re-introduce full BC next year, once production costs have fallen.

Why do you expect them to re-introduce full BC next year?

BC is achieved by using the exact components that are in the PS2PS1? They cannot be "cost reduced" any further. Prolly cost more due to lack of quantity.

BC most likely adds a good $30-$35 to the cost of each console.

Every PS3 SKU has PS1 B/C...and the limited 80GB bundles did not use PS2 hardware compenents (removed the ee chip)

Yeah I know, I was saying it in response to the bolded bit above, just clarifying that BC isn't achived through emulation for either PS1PS2. Even in those 80GB MGS4 special editions, they are only emulating the graphics chip. Anyway, OT sorry about that.

PS1 is fully emulated. In the current 80Gb it's the EE that is emulated, GS is still hardware as it's difficult to emulate. New 80Gb will still have PS1 BC same as current 40Gb does as no additonal hardware is necessary for this.

SCE to Exclude EE+GS Chip from European PS3

Feb 27, 2007 18:55
Naoki Asakawa, Nikkei Electronics

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) has announced that the EE+GS chip, an LSI chip provided to support backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 (PS 2), would be excluded from the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console slated for launch in Europe on March 23, 2007. Instead, the operation of PS2 will be emulated by a combination of new graphics LSI chip and software.

The PS3 console available in Japan and the US is equipped with EE+GS chip which is PS2's core LSI chip composed of Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer integrated onto a single chip. Instead of the EE+GS chip which will be excluded from the European version of the console, SCE will provide a new graphics LSI chip that can replace the functions performed by Graphics Synthesizer. The functions of Emotion Engine will be emulated by software based on Cell Broadband Engine. With the adoption of the new specifications, the company has succeeded in reducing the LSI chip size and the component cost.
