Because the far bigger football events took place already months ago (Africa Cup of Nations) and some weeks ago (Euro 2008). Furthermore all major European football leagues start their new season during the Olympic Games.
Football/soccer is the main sport in general worldwide, but it's a marginalized sport at the Olympic Games.
