TORONTO - Emergency crews and police have evacuated a northwest area of Toronto after a large blast was felt rattling through the city.

At around 4 a.m. Sunday, what is thought to be a propane factory caused a massive explosion. Emergency and fire officials have set up a 1,000-metre perimeter around the site of the blast, which is in a mixed residential and industrial neighbourhood, and are yet to confirm any deaths or injuries.

Toronto EMS duty officer David Viljak said emergency officials have received reports of "casualties" but can't confirm them since the victims are "inside the hot zone" and behind the barricade.

Huge billows of dark smoke could be seen from the area of the blast, according to local media reports.

"Actually . . . it was very large (the explosion), we are two miles away here, and we could feel it," said the EMS officer.

Several police officers, fire crews and emergency crews are on site, investigating the blast and trying to keep people out of the danger zone.
