I never played the original, but I don't think FarCry 2 is going to have much in common with it. They have thrown out all of the characters and the setting from the first one and Crytek is no longer developing the game. Crysis is more of a true sequel to FarCry imo. I gather Ubi retained the rights to the name after publishing the first few games and decided to use it to push a completely different game which is actually doing some quite interesting things (In this interview they talk about how the story will be somewhat dynamic http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3727/redefining_game_narrative_.php)
I wasn't holding out much hope for this game as it looked like another generic shooter till i read that interview. Now I'm hoping for an evolution of Dues Ex albeit with a completely different setting)
