Final Fantasy titles have dropped in sales while the cost of development has only risen while also considering the fact that the combined userbases of both 360 and PS3 does not equate to the PS2 when FFXII was first released. Also, JRPG have taken a back seat to games like sports and FPS's while they also have to combat the casual market with games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Reality speaks here. |
Quoted so everybody can read this post again. So far it's made more sense than the rest of the thread, combined.

Sense? Why not compare early FF games that released on console, like FFVII and FFX. PS2 were 6 years old when FFXII got released.....

Now if I'm wrong with anything I'm about to say, please correct me because I hate to be a bearer of wrong info. IIRC, FFX sold 8 million copies while FFXII only sold 5 million. Not only did FFXII sold less than FFX, the PS2's userbase had grown by then (duh!) resulting in less copies sold. But also this was after Squaresoft was absorbed by Enix because of increased production cost. I believe these are facts. My prediction is that FFXIII will be a commercial failure compared to previous installments on BOTH PS3 and 360 platforms. And this is coming from a die-hard FF fan from the NES to the PSOne days. Personally, I think this game will SUCK! Just a gut feeling here. And even if it doesn't, I don't see it retaining anything "Final Fantasy" to appeal to the base fans especially when you consider past sales. Yes, games need to change over time but when the deviation is so far, you need to garner to a new audience which is going to be hard to do when you consider the long history of the "Final Fantasy" name amidst the present competition and changing mindset. |
FFXII sold less because it came out so late in this gen almost same time with the nexgen consoles. Usually the first FF sell the most and the last ones sell less. I'm not going to discuss quality of the game. Its is the first FF on nextgen consoles and it is coming out on huge 2x userbase and there is alot of hype behind it.(What I believe). There is no right and wrong here.

Maybe, but that's hard to believe when you consider that the PS2 was still selling well after the release of the Wii and PS3. Also, there was a greater gap between the releases of FFX and FFXII when compared to the PSOne versions of FF. And to Stats87, the difference in sales between FFX and FFXII is reasonable less that those with modded PS2 at the time of FFXII's release. But I would dare to say that hardcore gamers and diehard FF fans would support the industry, especially a known but declining franchise such as Final Fantasy.
