A system with the momentium of the PS2, or that defines its value outside of raw processing power like the Wii, can survive in a market where it is dramatically underpowered in relation to its competition. A system that defines its value in processing power or high tech features (like the PS3 does) that does not have the momentium and third party support from being the market leader will have a very difficult time after a (much) higher performance system with more advanced features is released at an affordable price.
In other words, when the next generation begins a the PS3 is going to be one of the systems that has the most difficulty maintaining its sales.
