I, personally, took a PS3 not out of loyalty to Sony, but partly due to Microsoft hatred. There are other reasons, of course:
RRoD on the 360. It's insulting to have such a high failure rate on the hardware.
The games that were sort of promised, previously exclusive to Sony systems. Notably FF13 - as time goes on, we'll be seeing Microsoft/Nintendo taking more and more.
Bluray was doing much better than HD-DVD, I believe. You have to buy an add-on to play HD-DVD's on the 360 anyway (I think).
That's for me personally, of course. As for Europe / Japan, it's a given Sony would outsell them there.
On topic, I think the PS3 would be lucky to reach half that (75m).
