My opinion: if it was 2 years ago, I would say buy a 360.
But Now: Buy a PS3.
Future potential is all that a person could hope for.
My friends ask me this question a lot, and as both hd consoles are very good. I always answer the same:
If you have an HD tv, buy the PS3.
if not, the 360.
