Was that your first Wii experience? If so you might be having early cotnrol adaptation problems. Those of us that were familiar with the D-pad for years and jumped to analog on the N64/PS had a similiar adaptation problem for the first few games.
If it's not your first Wii gaming experience, then perhaps what you wanted Mario to do just wan't allowed in the game...like take out a machine gun and shoot goombas. No matter hard you try, he's just not gonna do that.

You might as well watch a movie or read a book then. Gameplay should come first and foremost for "videogames".
