Game of the Year awards are as pointless and political as any movie/music award ...
What exactly makes a game the Game of the Year?
If it is highest sales, in 2006 that would have been The New Super Mario Bros.
If it is highest rating by critics, in 2006 that would have been The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
If it is most hours played, in 2006 that would have been World of Warcraft
and so on ...
In any given year you will have dozens of games which are worthy of a Game of the Year award, but the winners are typically the favourite game of the handful of individuals who get the opportunity to vote.
