I've seen surveys to the effect that a higher PERCENTAGE of PS2 owners said they'd be brand-loyal and buy PS3 than the percentages of XBox and Gamecube fans that said they'd be brand-loyal to MS and Nintendo

If for two successive generations you have the most popular console by far, then that's going to affect people's perception of the next generation and skew the results of the poll. Perhaps people expected the PS3 to race ahead, but that hasn't happened. There are also things that have happened since the poll that can change people's minds, such as the pricing of the three consoles, so I wouldn't read too much into it if I was you.

The success of PS1 and PS2 "skewed" the poll by making PS2 owners respond that they were less likely to get a PS3 in the near term, because there were still so many PS2 games on the horizon (and yeah, because PS3 was initially too expensive for mass market).

My recollection of the survey was meant to suggest that the "racing ahead" hasn't happened YET.  I doubt PS3 will race ahead of Wii, but still, the PS2 fanbase is pretty loyal and to many of them, a gaming console is a "Playstation."
