You set up the gambits in the order of importance based on the most dire of situations. Your first gambit would be to use a phoenix down if a party member dies. That means that if a member does die, that gambit will take over as priority. If no one is dead, the AI goes to gambit number 2, which should be something about healing a teammate, and or casting a spell that would eliminate status ailments. Your absolute last gambit should be your basic attack.

The gambit system is one of the most brilliant systems i've ever played in an RPG, and I hope the FF series keeps it around. My one and only gripe is the same as twestern's, they don't allow you to acquire the correct gambits from the start, limiting how well your auto pilot will work. In addition, gambits typically pop up after a magic is able to be purchased in the game, so for a few good hours, you have to manually cast it no matter what. My other gripe with it is why should they be purchased? All gambits should be available to be used, and you need to be smart enough to know what your character should be doing. Great system, lousy execution.

Overall solid game. I would recommend it.
