I was starting to think I was the only who actually liked FFXII. I have already logged over 140 hours into the game. I think people flame the gambit system because they don't know how to use it correctly. My favorite part of FFXII was the fact that there were no more random battles! As for the characters, I didn't care too much for Vaan and Penelo in FFXII, which was too bad since there are supposedly the main characters. Balthier and Fran were freaking awesome though. However, in FFXII Revenant Wings, Vaan and penelo are a little more likeable.
My only gripe with the game is that after you exit the Henne Mines, the only way to get back in is through a teleport crystal (the orange ones), but since I never touched the crystal in the Henne Mines, i can't go back and complete my last hunts :(
