Writing a game to the greater restrictions of the parallel PS3 will benefit the parallel nature of the 360 as well. Honestly, the amount of sloppy, over-abstracted, OO-code that gets dumped into modern-day games is staggering, and the fact the Sony forces a lower-level mentality on the devs is the reason why many PS2 games (like God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Ratchet & Clank, etc.) looked so darn good, despite the hardware being "lesser" than the competition.

Its a "survival of the fittest" way to look at it, but the consumer will get better games for both the PS3 and 360 from EA, as the outcome of this decision, and, as a "side benefit" (if you can call it that), many of the less capable technical teams will get weeded out of making games.
