I like JRPGs, but it is true that many are overly melodramatic and filled with the same cliches. But.... that's also fairly true of a lot of American games.

The ones that *aren't* melodramatic usually have no story at all and are just pure gameplay, or are geared toward younger players.

Some games really do try to be powerful character driven pieces (FF is a series that has been moving farther and farther away from that and more to Hollywood style shallow appeal), but its easy to slip into exagerrated and forced emotional contrivances when your characters fail to have the substance they should have.

I think its an unfair criticism to label all jrpgs as the same cliched stories and forced archetypes of good and evil, but I think in the case of Final Fantasy he may be right.
