Your only error is assuming that N64 wasn't important. Without the stuff they did on N64, PS1 and 2 would not have been what they were. Edit: Wii would not be what it is, if Nintendo hadn't been observing how the PS1 and 2 sold so much.
It's that competition and innovation that pushed that first 3D generation so hard and so rapidly.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
