While it's technically true that the word fad could be applied without it being a bad thing I really don't think that's the case here. The reason Wii fans get upset at the word "fad" is because whenever somebody brings it up they are using it with an underlying negative connotation.
When the Wii launched the word "fad" was thrown around as people predicted that Wii sales would crash hard and crash soon. Over a year and a half has passed and that has proven not to be the case. It's fine to consider the Wii a "fad" if you are doing it without assuming that the Wii will fall to sub 200k sales WW before year's end but that's not the mentality of many posters/bloggers.
