For initiates, something like Batman Year one is a good start into the world of mature comics
i recently read the Sandman graphic novels(Neil Gaiman) and i can recommend them wholeheartedly
i am a huge fan of Alan Moore( he is the best there is without a doubt) and V for Vendetta and Watchmen are the best of his works, imo.
@d21lewis yeah the crises have year long build ups, with numerous tie-ins, have to seek some of them online, cause cant get'em all
@rocketpig couldnt agrre with you more about the Frank Miller DD era. The DD Born Again story arc was one of the best things i've read in a regular series
