Yeah lithium ion batteries can be dangerous if not charged correctly. They have to be charged relatively slowly (1 hour minimum to be full) compared to other batteries, and can't take much abuse. I played around with them with my remote control planes. If you charge them incorrectly they burst into flames with molten goo and smoke. Pretty nasty.
But they use them because they have alot of energy stored, and they are very lightweight compared to other batteries.
