hmm that's weird. It's because you only just got one and it was behind...just so happened you got it as the new ones were coming out. They had a small one before 2.40 (like a week before) then came 2.41 to fix it for those that it didn't work for and now 2.42. It's not normally like this...you can go months without them. They are adding a lot of things right now though. This one was probably to help some games run better etc.
Don't know why you got one when you went to the Playstation store though. Don't worry it isn't always like this and you don't get one to the tune of once a week every time there is new content.
