Most movies are in a 2.35 ratio, TVs are in a 1.78 ratio. DVDs should also have black bars on the top and bottom if you are watching them with the correct aspect ratio, unless the movie was reformatted for widescreen TVs (never actually heard of this happening) or was originally in 16:9 (1.78) format.
