MS already *did* and is *doing* hardcore. Their library has far more hardcore entries than the competition. Balls comment rejected.
Here's an analogy for you - cultivating your identity in the hardware world is just like being a man. You can play football with the boys out on the field, but at the end of the day you can still wear that crisp pink shirt instead of that grungy jersey you've been wearing all week. Why? Because you're comfortable with your heterosexuality and with being a man.
Microsoft can wear the pink shirt and still be hardcore. Rawr.

I do. I don't like the fact that Microsoft is basically ripping Nintendo off entirely, but I do like that they saw something unique and are trying to improve it. Already I'm seeing Microsoft's ambitions with these avatars far extending what Nintendo is doing with Miis and I like that they are addressing the main problem a lot of people had with Miis which is customizing the clothing.
