If only it were only on this site it wouldn't be too bad, it seems to be more of an Internet thing or at least the nerd/geek part of it.
Also, starting on a site dealing with a mostly young-male hobby by pointing out that you are female might not be the best idea. If Nintendo Fan Girl or Onna (before she left) had done the same thread it probably would have gone better as a lot more people on the site know them and thus not only would there be less "You're a woman OMBWTF prove it with nudie pic or you're a 50 yo balding yet very hairy man" and the few that would be there would probably be counterbalanced by older members making fun of them for not knowing them or not knowing they are female "Lol, what rock do you live under not to know xxx is a girl..." so it wouldn't as easily get out of hand.
I'm not saying it is fair or normal and hopefully Nintendo's broader appeal can bring more women to gaming (casual or not) so this kind ofreaction becomes archaic but meanwhile it is probably easier to go with the flow and not paint a big sign in one of your first posts that most immature male readers here will read as "Boobs here" to which they only know how to respond by either disbelieving or drooling with a vacant expression on their face.
Oh, and whether you are a man or a woman, welcome to VGChartz
