The 120 Hz refresh rate is for displaying 24p content without the judder. (120 being a multiple of 24).
And the "Motion Plus" or "motion flow" technologies make a fucking huge difference. Basically frames are interpolated and displayed at 120 Hz. The effect is extremely noticable. Motion is seriously ultra-smooth and this is no understatement. You could compare it to when you fast forward video.
Some people find it distracting though, as it gives movies a "soap opera effect" (cinematic film is shot at 24 fps, while TV cameras do 60 fps) and many people like the dreamlike motion-blurred look of cinematic film.
