I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm not sure the conditions needed to begin life (at least on Earth) ever existed on Mars, and even if they did, there's also a high chance that the needed chemical reactions never happened.

 

To be honest I think the best bet for microbial life here in our own solar system is on EuropA.  Mars is definitely a possibility like you said, but I think it is the first we are exploring because of proximity not because of odds.

 

I agree with you there. What we know of Europa suggests it is far more likely to be a habitat for life than Mars. I personally think all this life-finding on Mars is a waste of time and money. Instead they should focus on preparing for a base/colony on Mars, or at least learning more about what it would be like to live there for long periods of time.
