I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm not sure the conditions needed to begin life (at least on Earth) ever existed on Mars, and even if they did, there's also a high chance that the needed chemical reactions never happened.

 

To be honest I think the best bet for microbial life here in our own solar system is on Europa.  Mars is definitely a possibility like you said, but I think it is the first we are exploring because of proximity not because of odds.
