I didn't use to care about politics, because it was easy not to. Growing up with Clinton as president for many of my teen years, there was little that seemed "wrong" with the direction of our government.
Once Bush got into office and started making blunders left and right, I started paying attention. Once he got re-elected, the warning bells in my head went crazy and I realized that it was the fault of apathetic people like myself that would allow this country to go down the shitter.
I have since been much more active, learning about local and national issues, checking on voting records for the people in office or running for office, even writing letters to my congressman on occasion on certain issues.
Some good Ben Franklin quotes:
"This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins."
And in regard to some of these "Homeland Security" acts that have been working at stripping away our freedoms:
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty. "
Turns out old Ben was a pretty smart guy 0_o
