I have a 50'' "Soniq" Plasma (720p / 1080i), and I love it. I would always recommend a Plasma for movies & gaming - LCDs make for better monitors, or when you need a super high resolution.
I also think full HD (1080p) is just a waste of money, but the cost has come down a lot recently.
I bought my TV for under $2000 AU around 12 months ago, and its now $1299 (AU). The 40'' version is only around $799 AU.
