It costs more than your average DVD too - by quite a decent margin, depending on where you source them from. Xbox Live Gold
It costs more than the other online services but is almost universally seen as better. So why when the Xbox360 and the PS3 are compared is the Blu ray player seen as a big plus? If you add up the extra cost for those disks in that format it could cost you over $100 per year and if you don't use it, it provides no advantage obviously. They both cost more money than competing options, they both provide arguably a better experience/service and yet one is a horrible negative, adding up to hundreds of dollars over a consoles lifetime whereas the other is considered an excellent bonus that adds value to the console.

This is an awful, awful post.
Xbox live has more online content than blu-ray??? Wow, who would have guessed?
It also has more online games than blu-ray?!
If you wanted this to be a comparison why didn't you compare the PSN+Blu-ray against Xbox live+HD-DVD? As it is, this is pointless.
If I don't use blu-ray it doesn't provide and advantage? Last time I checked, every time I put a game in my PS3 I'm using blu-ray.
You also need an "expensive player" to use Xbox live, and a netflix account if you want to download movies, all 3 of which cost money.
Edit: I don't think anyone has argued that Xbox Live is bad, but paying for it is, thats why its always a negative instead of a positive. Blu-ray is just an added bonus.
As in go buy us some coffee.
