The big JRPGs take 30-40 hours or more just to beat the main story. WRPGs on the other hand, aren't as story driven as JRPGs and expect you to do more than the main story and that explains the short length of the main story in WRPGs. Only casual RPGers play RPGs for the main story alone.

I should remind you that there are WRPGs with compelling stories i.e.Mass Effect, Planescape:Torment  In fact, it is argued that the best stories in WRPGs are better than the best stories in JRPGs.
