I think the biggest problem with this topic is perception.

For example, I'm sure people have noticed that when you're a fan of some music genre (say, Rock), you can easily tell the difference between punk and heavy metal, emo or grunge: when you're a big fan constantly monitoring this music, tiny adjustments to the formula can seem like a big deal.

By contrast, stuff you don't like (such as Rap, perhaps, or Classical music) may all sound alike to you, and you don't understand how people can tell the difference.


The point being: when you're really in to a specific thing, tiny adjustments can seem like a big deal, while if you're not in to something you can barely notice big adjustments.
