At the time I bought the 360 a year ago, it was definitely worth it due to low number of titles I wanted to play on the PS3, which was seeing more use as a movie player. There were about 4-5 big games that had accumulated on the 360 I was ready to buy at the time so it wasn't a tough decision, sweetened by the ability to play the movies on HD-DVD that were not available on Blu-Ray.

Competing media formats always = lose for the consumers. HD-DVD no longer a factor.

What would have probably been a better choice was to do a PC build at the time as all the big games I've bought and enjoyed for the 360 have been published on Games For Windows.

With the PC I bought and modified after buying a 360, it is now pretty redundant as a gaming platform. Given the choice between 360 version and PC version, I'll buy the PC version (better visuals and performance minus the 360 license fee). I've already played enough PC versions of 360 games I already own for it to be crystal clear which version I'd rather be playing.

The 360 only beats the PC in terms of convenience and simplicity. Faster start up, no tweaking of settings, no quitting of background apps, etc. Assuming the player had a decent, current mid-range rig (dual/quad core CPU, 3-4GB RAM, 512-1GB video card with an 8800 series or newer GPU), the 360 loses much of its allure. XBL on PC is now free, so even the XBL argument for the 360 is a bit deflated.

But there are enough 360 only games (mostly minor titles rather than big multi-platform titles) to make the platform worth having, and since I'm not the kind of person who wheels and deals in secondary games and hardware as it isn't worth my time or effort, I'm keeping it as a secondary platform.

Because of the games I already have and the ones I'll buy in the future, I will be buying a second 360 even though I've had no hardware problems of any kind at all.

However, I won't be buying that second 360 until late into the console cycle when the redesigned 360 with standard 60GB drive (or whatever is the standard by then) is priced under $200. Probably in another 2 years or so. By then, it will only be as a spare console in case anything happens to the original which seems more likely than not.
