Actually AT&T's monopoly worked very well. When it was forced to split during divestiture, it F'd up the whole telecom industry and made it worse for customers in price and service.

 

 

I hope you are kidding. The increased competition caused the prices of phone calls (especially long-distance calls) to drop precipitously.

You were -5 years old when it was finalized in 1982? The long distance rates had decreased, that is true. But the local rates rose, and maintenance service suffered. According to any of the older techs in my industry, things got solved far smoother and quicker when it was one company. Today the bickering between the two or three or more providers involved in any situation really extend the resolution of any problems and the cost.
