wow, why does Sega's last report concerning Genesis say it shipped 30.75m yet this reports that this many years later they have only sold 29m. Are there still ~1.75m sitting on retails shelves?

I think these numbers need to be clarified with http://vgchartz.com/worldcons.php where we can see the last shipped figures. The last fiscal report is from 2007 and all of those should easily be 'sold' by now, in fact the current gen machines have higher sales than those shipped figures by now.

I wish ioi would update that page with the last couple of reports.

these sites say 29 million SEGA Genesis units sold. Hard to really say whos number are more accurate. If only SEGA would make a site showing their systems' worldwide sales numbers.

I think their fiscal report is the most accurate. That is why the vgc data from the link above must be the most accurate. Those sites you reference are referncing the last media discussion about the Genesis, whereas the vgc one is for the last total number of units shipped, which by now MUST be equal to sold.

Edit: your wikipedia article uses your wired.com article as a reference. Basically, you only have one source that has no source.

but where does VG Chartz get their numbers from?

Oh for the love of god. Did you not actually read my post or the page I posted?

1. The http://vgchartz.com/worldcons.php pages is a list of shipped figures taken directly from the companies fiscal reports.

2. For all non-currently selling systems, basic logic would dictate that those shipped figures must be equal to sold figures after a year.

3. Combine 1 & 2 and you must realize that Sega's last fiscal report that included Genesis had a lifetime shipped figure of 30.75m and since that was many years ago its lifetime sold must also be 30.75m.

I don't think I could make it any clearer than that.
