these sites say 29 million SEGA Genesis units sold. Hard to really say whos number are more accurate. If only SEGA would make a site showing their systems' worldwide sales numbers.

I think their fiscal report is the most accurate. That is why the vgc data from the link above must be the most accurate. Those sites you reference are referncing the last media discussion about the Genesis, whereas the vgc one is for the last total number of units shipped, which by now MUST be equal to sold.
Edit: your wikipedia article uses your wired.com article as a reference. Basically, you only have one source that has no source.
