Is anyone besides me sick of fanboy predictions?
In January of 2008, I bought an Xbox 360. I have been a PC gamer exclusively for the last 12 years. Before that, I had the NES, the SNES, and a brief stint with the Dreamcast after skipping all the 64 bit machines. (I'm still of the opinion that the best console ever made was the SNES.) After I went off to college, I stuck strictly to my PC and continued to do so until recently. The PC as a gaming platform seems closer to death than it ever has before, and being a father of a one year old, I can't justify $600 graphics cards every two years anymore.
SO, in January it was time for me to choose a console. I chose the Xbox 360 due mostly to the fact that four of my friends have them. I thought I had gotten away from all the "DEATH OF PC GAMING!!!" drama, but I had forgotten all about the console wars that are constantly waged on the internet. I immediately started looking around in some different forums, and started noticing a pattern right away. Whenever a good announcement was made about the PS3, you'd see a new rash of trash talk about the PS3. Whenever a good announcement was made about the 360, you'd see a bunch of new trash talk about the 360. And in between, when there are no announcements being made at all, it's just a bunch of people saying a bunch of really stupid stuff about things they don't have any clue about.
Depending on what day you look at a forum, you can either feel really bad or really good about the console you own. Everyone seems to think they know everything. If the things that all the fanboys say were true, the Xbox 360 would be dead RIGHT NOW, the PS3 would have passed it up by now in overall sales, and developers would have dropped all support for it. The same predictions happen to the PS3 too. My point for this thread is this: Every time I let a fanboy's ridiculous ranting and raving get me worrying about future support for my 360, something happens that reminds me that I shouldn't worry at all. FFXIII anyone? How about all the new exclusives on the docket for release in the next couple of years? Or all the other cool stuff that was announced for the 360 at E3?
I'm only focusing this on the 360 because it takes way more of a fanboy beating than the PS3 these days, but the same things happen to both consoles. And what does any of it mean in the end? NOTHING!!! It has been proven time and time and time again that fanboys don't know what's going on. If they did, they would work for Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. Or they would at least be trading stock for those three companies. Fanboys have no clue what's in the works, what trends will come and go, what things these companies are keeping under wraps in attempts to one up each other. I started reading VGChartz because it seemed to be somewhat light on the fanboy-ism, but it's not. They're everywhere, and they're all equally uninformed and lack the motivation to come up with research, numbers, articles, etc. on any of the stupid things they say.
Microsoft just had a terrific E3. I was out of town for most of it, but when I came back, I noticed a new influx of 360 bashing posts in the Microsoft forums. And I knew this would be the case when I got back in town. When there is good news about one console, fanboys of the other lash out and the BS starts flying. Just an observation. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sick of this happening.
