The combination of Action and the depth of an RPG.
Action RPGs made me appraciate RPGs in general, around the time of Secret of Mana really. The Action RPGs were also much more rewarding experiences around the time turn based became stagnant and a lot of JRPGs refused to stop rehashing the geenric turn based system with the same spells and same mechanics, whereas games like Mana or Tales or SO had completely different combat systems that made each one interesting, especially when they took advantage of the ability to move around and adding that layer of depth to spells and special attacks that didn't just make it about selecting an option but using timing and acuracy too.
