Now as for bluray drives being slower then DVD drives, I'm not sure how or why this is possible, I'm guessing it's not. But mabey blurays read slower because they are processing more information? |
the difference in speed is just the technology of the laser read heads. With each different format, the laser head has to be adjusted technilogically and so the old ones dont apply to the new ones. so with dvd technology old and blu ray young, the difference (over 1 year ago, maybe 2 depending on dev kits) was the fast read head of dvd vs high data density of blu ray. obviously dvd won that battle.
on the other hand, proper use of the hdd to stream things can recover for a lot of the lost speed of the disk read speed while keeping the data density of blu ray.
fast disk read times doesnt just apply to load times, it also applies to streaming textures. if the system can stream more textures, then a level can either be more densely packed or more detailed and mostly likely both.
