BEVERLY HILLS, California- - Lost bosses took the stage for the July 17th Press Tour gathering of all-star show runners (Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, Eli Stone) to talk about the art and craft of sustaining a hit series.
Though exec producers Damon Lindelof (pictured) and Carlton Cuse did not spill major plot twists, they did offer insights about the next to last season of Lost, which begins shooting in August.
Carlton Cuse, on the island's magnetic allure for the Oceanic Six : "The island does seem to be drawing people back. It's the big turn in the story and something you'll be seeing a lot of in season five.
Damon Lindelof, on separation anxiety: "You have to break your characters up so they're either geographically or emotionally separate. We have that intensely in mind. . . hopefully there won't be too much delayed gratification."
Lindelof, on diversity: "Because Lost is not set in the U.S. but on an airplane, it allowed us to go with an unusually diverse cast from all over the world. At the same time, we have to be an equal opportunity killer. We're not going to go: 'Oh, lets stretch [a minority character] to season six. In fact, we had a tally: we've killed a lot of white people so far and we'll kill a lot more white people this season."
Cuse, on keeping the pot boiling for season five: "This is obviously a tricky year for us. It's like [we're between] the two towers in that season five links us to the final season and we've know what we wanted to do there for a long time."
Lindelof, on taking chances creatively: "The worst thing would be to be boring. If we're going to be bad, we're going to be spectacularly bad."
Lindelof, on the writers' strike and fan feedback: "The good thing about the strike is that it allowed us to course-correct. We had to stop writing before the season was done so we were able to [incorporate] feedback from friends, family and fans. This coming year it's more like the cable model where we're going to be nearly done with the whole season before the first episode airs, and that scares the shit out of me."
