I don't think it ever was 'cool' to introduce your band, to me it is no more than a decent gesture to your colleagues to let them enjoy the respect they deserve for allowing the singer (in this case) to perform well. Classy as you call it indeed. But then again as you describe his 'contact' with the band that might do the trick for the band itself, but it still leaves the audience not able to applaud a single musician.
(Two weeks ago i decided 7 in the morning (slightly intoxicated) to go see Neil Young that same evening, and boy am i glad i did!)
